Meet Kathleen (76), a Meals on Wheels client with a rich tapestry of hobbies and interests. From her days in a bluegrass band to her love for writing, music, photography, cooking, knitting, and crocheting, Kathleen’s life has been a colorful and creative one. However, health challenges made it difficult for her and her husband John to maintain their nutrition. Since starting with Meals on Wheels in 2022, the couple has experienced a significant positive change.

WELLNESS CHECKS & IMPROVED WELL-BEING

The nutrition from MOWLB meals has greatly impacted Kathleen and John’s lives - improving their energy and overall health. The MOWLB support coordinator was crucial in connecting them to resources and affordable healthcare. One referral led Kathleen to get new glasses, ending years of double vision. Kathleen also reported a healthy weight gain, which was both welcomed and needed!

OVERCOMING CHALLENGES & STAYING CONNECTED

Living a peaceful, remote life near Carter Lake posed challenges for regular meal deliveries. However, Kathleen and John arranged weekly pick-ups of multiple meals, ensuring they continued to receive the nutritious food the needed. The MOWLB staff cherished seeing them during these pick-ups. Kathleen often expressed gratitude for the meals and the staff, highlighting how the special meals supported her diet, and thanked Kelly, one of the MOWLB cooks, for hand-delivering meals on multiple occasions.

a heartfelt farewell

Kathleen and John are now moving to Connecticut to be closer to family. While they will be greatly missed in Colorado, the move will allow them to remain healthy with the support of their loved ones. Photos of their Colorado home now adorn their new place out east, and a farewell card from the MOWLB staff serves as Kathleen’s Bible bookmark.

lasting impact

Kathleen’s story is proof that wellness checks and nutritious meals can make a big difference. Kathleen doesn’t think she could have made the move out east without her strength-giving nutritious meals. Her favorite saying, “The more heart you share, the more heart you have available,” perfectly captures the spirit of Meals on Wheels and the community that supports it!

Kathleen’s inspiring journey with Meals on Wheels is a testament to the power of community and compassion in fostering health and independence.
