The Heartwarming Journey of Cindy Berg with Meals on Wheels of Loveland and Berthoud

Icon of three individuals and a heart

Cindy Berg’s journey with Meals on Wheels of Loveland and Berthoud (MOWLB) began in the early 2000s. After leaving her job in pharmaceuticals to stay home with her three children, a friend introduced her to MOWLB, suggesting it would be a fulfilling experience. “She said clients usually like seeing little ones,” Cindy recalls.

Inspired, Cindy started volunteering on Fridays and quickly fell in love. “Clients seemed to really like seeing children each week,” she adds. However, as her children grew and began attending school full-time, Cindy transitioned to substitute teaching, which demanded her Fridays and led to her reluctantly pausing her volunteer work.

Fast forward to the present, with her children now 28, 26, and 26 years old, Cindy’s positive memories of MOWLB continued to resonate. About two years ago, she reached out to see if volunteers were needed and was thrilled to rejoin the team. “It’s great to be back!” she says enthusiastically.

Cindy’s initial impression of MOWLB was overwhelmingly positive. “I was impressed 20 years ago but am amazed at the strides this organization has made,” she shares. Describing it as a “well-oiled machine,” Cindy highlights the organization’s efficiency, extensive variety of nutritious meals, daily wellness checks, and the compassionate individuals who make it all possible.

For Cindy, the most challenging part of MOWLB’s mission is witnessing clients lose their independence. “It can be heartbreaking at times to sit and chat with so many about what their life ‘used to be like’,” she admits.

Despite this, she remains committed to offering support and companionship to those in need. Cindy treasures the relationships she has built with clients over the years. “I love seeing the same clients each week and checking in on them - most have become friends,” she says.

She also enjoys meeting other like-minded volunteers, noting the diverse and interesting life stories she encounters.

Cindy’s advice to potential volunteers or donors is simple: “Do it!” Reflecting on her own experiences and the impact MOWLB has had on the community, she emphasizes, “Seeing the impact of MOWLB in our own community has been so impactful and rewarding. Please make a difference in the Loveland and Berthoud area. You won’t regret it!”

When Cindy isn’t volunteering, she enjoys hiking with her husband, golfing (albeit badly, she jokes), walking with friends or her dog Marty, gardening, yard work, listening to books online, and most importantly, spending time with her family and friends. In total, Cindy has dedicated about six years to volunteering with Meals on Wheels of Loveland and Berthoud. Her enduring commitment and passion for the cause make her a cherished member of the MOWLB family!

Wellness Checks: A fall prevented from becoming a tragedy

A couple of weeks ago, Cindy arrived at one of her regular client’s homes around noon. This client has significant mobility, balance, and hearing issues. Because of this, it’s not uncommon to have to wait a bit for her to come to the door. On this particular day, the client didn’t answer, which was unusual and naturally worrisome.

When something like this happens, drivers are instructed to contact MOWLB, who then give clients and/or their contact person a quick call to ensure they’re okay. Cindy returned to her car to do this, but there was still no answer. When this occurs, drivers fill out a standard MOWLB form to leave on the clients’ doors letting them know they stopped by. When Cindy went back to leave the form, she saw her client on the floor on the other side of the sliding glass door. She’d fallen and was on her back, conscious but unable to move.

Cindy tried to open the door, but it was locked. She quickly alerted MOWLB and called 911. Unable to enter, she kept her client calm through the glass, reassuring her that help was coming and encouraging her to stay on the floor. Within minutes, EMTs, her daughter (contacted by MOWLB), and a neighbor arrived. Cindy then continued her route. The following Friday, the client was back to her old self, and Cindy was thankful for a happy ending!
