Delivery with a Difference
A recent Meals on Wheels delivery in Loveland really brought home the vital role our volunteers play in our community.
A dedicated volunteer delivery driver, Jason, was on his regular route, delivering to Betty's home. Typically, Betty waits for her delivery in a chair by the door. Volunteers will knock, open the door, announce themselves, and enter to place her meal on the table beside her. However, on this particular day, Jason arrived and didn't see Betty in her chair. But he did hear her call out for help. Betty had fallen and was unable to get up.
Jason immediately called 911 and then our office, staying with Betty to provide comfort until emergency services arrived. While Jason assisted Betty, our staff jumped into action. Our Volunteer Coordinator, Michelle, left to deliver the remainder of his route. Our Support Coordinator, Diane, got on the phone to call and inform Betty’s family. Meanwhile, staff members stepped in to answer phones and ensure all other delivery drivers out on routes had the support they needed. It was a very smoothly executed adjustment, and I'm so proud of how our team works together.
Thankfully, Betty sustained only minor injuries. Despite the unsettling experience, Jason chose to complete the remaining deliveries on his route. When Michelle arrived to deliver the remainder of his meals, Jason expressed his concern for the people he serves, expressing the need toI check on everyone on his route. That's the kind of dedication we see every single day.
This incident underscores that Meals on Wheels provides more than just food; it offers a crucial safety net and a connection for vulnerable individuals in our community. The quick actions of Jason and our staff ensured Betty received prompt medical attention and that other recipients continued to receive their essential meals and daily check-ins. It's a reminder of why we do what we do.
Thank you to our dedicated volunteers. Your commitment makes a significant difference in the lives of our neighbors. We couldn't do this without you.
