Announcing the new Friends on Wheels Program at MOWLB

These days, everyone understands that social connections have a real impact on our well-being, especially as we age. Research reveals that a lack of social connections is worse for our health than smoking 15 cigarettes every day.

Recently, we surveyed our volunteers, asking what client concerns they see when delivering the meals. By far, loneliness and isolation were reported as the biggest issues our volunteers see.

MOWLB is doing something about that with the launch of our new Friends on Wheels Program!

Friends on Wheels is an in-home friendly visiting program that connects volunteers to our clients receiving meals, for an enhanced connection and friendship beyond the five-minute chat at the door.

A Friends on Wheels volunteer is matched with a Meals on Wheels client, who is interested in having a visitor once a week for an hour or two. Volunteers spend time chatting over coffee or tea, doing simple activities, listening to music, going for a walk, or playing games. Our clients make new friends and know they are cared about, beyond just being someone who receives a daily meal.

These connections are vital not only to our physical, mental, and emotional health but also to the health and well-being of our community.  Spending time in the company of others improves self-esteem, enhances mental function, and provides a sense of purpose. Through our Friends on Wheels Program, we are committed to being part of the solution.
